When a ‘Day In The Life' Goes Wrong

What It Is: Employees may want to think twice before vlogging at work. A MAC Cosmetics manager at LAX went viral after posting a “day in the life” vlog on TikTok in which she shared behind-the-scenes content from her workplace. The video followed the usual format but included content that exposed serious security vulnerabilities, such as airport security areas, her TSA badge, register access codes, and even cash handling processes. As a result, she was terminated from her role.
This incident reflects today’s era of oversharing on social media. Many creators (and even brands) forget that digital footprints have real-world consequences. There’s a delicate balance between showing authenticity when sharing your routine versus oversharing to the point where it compromises safety, career, or reputation.
The Brand Takeaway: For brands, this highlights the tension between attempted virality and long-term success and trust. While viral moments can feel exciting, when they come at the cost of safety or credibility, they can cause lasting damage. At the same time, it’s important to recognize that consumers genuinely enjoy authentic, behind-the-scenes workplace content. Brands can lean into that desire by creating structured opportunities for employees to share their stories in safe and brand-approved ways. This requires clear social media training so employees understand what’s acceptable to post and guidance as to what authentic moments can be shown without exposing sensitive information. With the right guardrails, brands can maintain both authenticity and security.
