What It Is: TikTok creator Vexbolts, the originator of the “let him cook” meme, has found himself in the middle of one of the latest trends taking over the for you page. In a movement labeled ‘The mass unfollowing of Vexbolts’ users rallied together to follow his account in hoards in order to then unfollow him all the same time as the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Day. The reason behind this? Users had grown sick of the creator “dragging” his popular meme and found the content to be unoriginal. This movement, which began with one simple comment left under a video, gained massive traction leading to brands like the NFL, NBA, and fellow popular creators like Mr. Beast and Dude Perfect hopping in to arrange the unfollowing.
Brand Takeaway: There are a few takeaways from this trend that could be useful for brands trying to grow a following on social media. First, is the fact that followers do not like seeing the same content repeated endlessly. By no means does this mean that if you find success within a format that you can’t use it again, just be sure to evolve the content in a way that keeps viewers engaged. Second, users enjoy being part of a community. Though this may seem obvious, these massive community-driven efforts encourage others to join in and participate. On the flip side, it is important as a brand to address whether it is appropriate for you to join in. While participating may drive millions of views to your posts, you don’t want to end up partaking in public bullying of a smaller creator or diminishing the reputation of the company that you represent.
