The Return of Vine
What’s Happening: 2017 called and Vine is back. Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey is funding diVine, a reboot of the original video app, and relaunched with access to an archive of over 100,000 classic Vines. Users can create new content, reclaim old accounts, and explore preserved internet culture from Vine’s early days. But the most distinctive feature is its firm anti-AI stance. diVine flags and blocks generative-AI videos, labeling its entire archive “Human-Made,” and verifying that new uploads actually originate from a smartphone camera.
This design positions diVine not as a TikTok competitor in the traditional sense, but as an intentional alternative. They want to be a platform built around authenticity, human creativity, and community control rather than corporate algorithms or synthetic content.
Brand Takeaway: diVine taps into a growing cultural divide. While AI content creation is exploding across major social platforms, younger audiences are increasingly skeptical of AI-generated “slop” and algorithmic manipulation. diVine’s strict “human-only” rule leverages that sentiment as a brand identity, framing itself as the antidote to the hyper-optimized, AI-filtered feeds of TikTok and Reels.
Authenticity is yet again becoming a differentiator. As AI saturates the content ecosystem, platforms and brands that show real people, real voices, and real moments may gain cultural relevance among audiences who crave originality and trust. diVine isn’t just reviving Vine: it’s reviving the idea that social media can feel human again.
