The Literacy Crisis

What It Is: How bad do you think the American literacy crisis is? For starters, not reading is becoming increasingly normalized. Recently, a series of TikTok videos has gone viral, in which user Brittney Dzialo and her friend document their series of unfortunate events after realizing they’re on a plane to Tunis, Tunisia, not Nice, France. Despite the many checkpoints at the airport, they only realized something was wrong when they saw the plane was labeled “Tunisair” instead of “Air France.”
While many users were invested in their journey and amused that they ended up in Africa, others were deeply concerned that they hadn’t read their boarding passes or noticed the signs for Tunis instead of Nice. The fact that they made it that far indicates a larger concern: a lack of everyday reading. This shift is driven by several factors: shorter attention spans, a growing reliance on bite-sized digital content, and the decreasing emphasis on reading as a key skill in educational success. More importantly, the virality of situations like this not only normalizes these oversights, but also reflects what is currently breaking through the algorithm—raw, spontaneous content rather than polished and thoughtfully produced posts.
Brand Takeaway: For brands, simplicity is key. The likelihood that users will engage with posts featuring heavy visuals or long copy is steadily decreasing. As users’ attention spans continue to become limited, so does their tolerance for dense information, regardless of how accessible it is. It’s important for brands to prioritize clarity and brevity in any content users might encounter.
