The Jaclyn Hill Controversy

What It Is: Jaclyn Hill has been on social media since 2011 when she first launched her Youtube channel showing celebrity makeup tutorials – and in the 14 years since she has garnered 8.5 million followers on Instagram, 1.2 million followers on TikTok, and 5.4 million subscribers on Youtube. However, as Jaclyn has recently found out, this no longer will guarantee views or engagement on her content. In a TikTok video posted to her account on December 4th Jaclyn decided to have an open conversation with her following about the downturn in her views. Citing that she “felt like she was running through mud to connect with her followers” Hill continued to say “When you’re getting 30,000 views but have 1 million followers, this is just not the way it used to be” reminiscing on the old days of social media prior to all the known algorithms these days. Though, this sentiment has been pushed back against by fans who have looked more deeply into the actual content being posted. As seen in the 12,000 comments underneath the original video, fans have felt as though Hill is out of touch with her following now - almost abandoning the content OG fans fell in love with and instead replacing it with videos of lavish living, lifestyle, and events.
The Brand Takeaway: This sentiment is something that’s been reflected across social media, especially as of late with the current climate of the world. As people struggle to afford the cost of food, housing, and clothes the last thing they’ll relate to is having to choose between two designer handbags to buy. It’s now incredibly important to assess content not only for entertainment purposes, but also for relatability and the general impression or tone the video might impose on the viewer. Reminiscent of Poppi’s vending machine giveaway, users no longer are interested in seeing brands or influencers flaunt wealth — instead preferring down to earth videos that highlight the real world or assist general communities that have strong ties to your brand. Moving forward, perhaps take a deep dive into your brands history and ownable truths attempting to find a unique way to talk to your community – rather than just hopping on the latest trend celebrating a celebrity engagement.
