The Blurred Lines of Value on TikTok
What It Is: Over the past week, TikTok creator @okaytyff posted a three-story carousel asking her fiancé how many likes she needed on a video to get two Coach bags. Her fiancé required double her follower count—50K likes—plus comments from Coach and Clarke Peoples. In the end, Clarke bought her the two Coach bags, but the story sparked controversy over whether her fiancé was being too cheap. Many users questioned if he was employed, offered to buy the bags themselves, and argued that $200 bags aren’t that expensive. On the other hand, some feel people’s understanding of money is warped by the constant visibility of wealth online. Clarke emphasized that for most people, it’s not normal to spend hundreds of dollars on purses. This controversy highlights how the value of money is becoming more fluid and shaped by what people see online. As wealth becomes more normalized online, spending large sums may also become the norm. Additionally, there has been an uptick in users asking their partners for materialistic gifts in exchange for TikTok likes.
Brand Takeaway: Brands should keep in mind that the standards for what is considered valuable and luxurious will continue to shift as users normalize wealth and consumerism based on what they see online. However, this perception should be shaped by consumers and not something brands impose in their social content simply to be part of the conversation.
