Social Users Are Battling Platform Policies With Emojis
What it is: If you’ve been seeing content related to the Israel-Hamas conflict on social media, you’ve probably seen the watermelon emoji. As some social media platforms continue to shadow ban content related to the conflict, users have found ways to replace keywords and hashtags with emojis. In this case, those in support of the #FreePalestine movement are using the watermelon emoji to symbolize the Palestinian flag, due to its red, green and white colors. This is not the first time social users get creative with the meaning of emojis, we’ve seen this in the past with the peach to symbolize buttocks or most recently the corn emoji to symbolize sex work.
What brands can learn: Brands should be hyperaware of emojis and their given symbolic meanings. If you see an emoji being used “out of context” it’s most likely being used to symbolize something completely different from its intended used. Make sure you’re utilizing resources like X, Reddit, and Urban Dictionary to find out how and why people are using certain emojis. If you’re not 100% sure that you should be using or interacting with content with a specific symbol, it is best to be cautious and not use or interact at all.
