‘Swag Gap’ Relationships

What It Is: A new dynamic has entered the Gen Z dating discourse: swag gap relationships. These relationships involve one partner who is perceived to have significantly cooler aesthetics, interests, intellect, or overall “vibes” than the other. The sentiment on TikTok is that this dynamic creates an imbalance that eventually brings up feelings like shame and embarrassment from the “cooler” partner, or drains them of their energies. Some even believe that swag gaps can extend to friendships, where feelings of jealousy can ultimately destroy even platonic relationships. As a result, many are now swearing off of these unbalanced associations and raising their standards, although some couples have learned to embrace their perceived swag gaps and disagree with such a narrow way of thinking.
The Brand Takeaway: This new focus on swag gaps says something about Gen Z’s underlying anxieties about social validation and comparison. Despite this generation’s cravings for authenticity, younger people suffer from an intense pressure to compare themselves to others online and are sensitive to perceived inferiority in social status. Brands can take note of this by championing inclusivity and individuality to combat comparison culture, and reinforce the idea that swag, style, and “cool” can mean something different to everyone. As this generation continues navigating self-esteem and self-worth in the digital age — and with modern dating feeling at its toughest — the right social content can encourage people to embrace their strengths and be open-minded to differences.
