Robophobia
What It Is: Users are increasingly making memes and coining derogatory terms to mock AI, emerging technologies, and even people who heavily rely on them. This trend, dubbed “robophobia,” includes the rise of AI related slurs like clankers, grokkers, and botlickers, which signal growing public skepticism and pushback against artificial intelligence. Many of these terms are rooted in historic slurs used against people, reflecting a desire to maintain human superiority and highlighting the complex, often adversarial relationship we have with technology. By personifying AI, users are treating it as a rival, a dynamic long explored in science fiction films, but now appearing in reality. These skits and memes, while seemingly playful and exaggerated, tap into a genuine fear of being overshadowed by technology and imagine a reality where humans and AI are in direct opposition.
Brand Takeaway: The introduction of these terms capture broader anxieties about automation, job loss, and reliance on machines. Tracking emerging language and memes online offers early warning signs of consumer attitudes toward AI. The friction in using AI is still met with hesitation by many consumers, and these perceptions will continue to evolve. Brands need to recognize that this hesitation is real and should actively monitor sentiment as it shifts, avoiding assumptions that public acceptance is guaranteed. Many people may personally use AI but feel uneasy when brands embrace it, as it forces them to confront the reality that everyone is becoming increasingly dependent on technology.
