Is Gen Z Over Corporate America?
What’s Happening: Gen Z continues to challenge the status quo, with some choosing to trade corporate ladder climbing for jobs on yachts — think: nannies or personal assistants to billionaires. For today’s post-grad 20-somethings, being privately staffed by the wealthy seems like the next best option to be paid well, receive health and retirement benefits, and also take on the lucrative and luxurious lifestyle of the extremely wealthy. According to Business Insider’s deep dive into this topic, in 2000, there were only about 322 people on Forbes’ list of billionaires. Now, that list has reached 3,000. As the list of billionaires grows, so does their private staffing. For the 20 somethings that want more than what Corporate American can offer them, why not pick up dog poop or change diapers for the ultra wealthy?
Brand Takeaway: Gen Z continues to be the generation that prefers the path less travelled, especially when it comes to career norms. Younger people continue to balance their personal values vs. society’s in how they define success. A 2025 Deloitte survey found that reaching a leadership position at work is a career goal for only 6% of Gen Zers. As they continue to challenge traditional career choices, it can be important for brands to reflect what Gen Z values such as independence, flexibility, and a life well-lived. Brands should be intentional about positioning their products and services to fit into a varity of lifestyles, not just the traditional 9-5 set.
