What It Is:Â Instagram has rolled out the latest feature on their platform, Instagram Maps, stirring controversy across social media. While not the first of its kind (Snapchatâs live map feature predates it), conversations around this update have largely been surrounding one concern: user safety.
Weâre living in the age of social media influencers, where many creators have amassed followings in the millions - most of whom theyâve never met. Providing these unknown followers with a live location to track their favorite influencer is not only breaching privacy, but potentially dangerous - giving stalkers and crazed fans targets to follow. Weâve already begun to see some celebrities be tracked on social media. The ability to pinpoint someoneâs location in real time could make influencers and everyday users vulnerable to harassment.
Brand Takeaway:Â The overarching takeaway from this rollout continues to center on safety and personal privacy. Instagram didnât create this feature out of thin air, there has been proven usage of features like this in the past. However, its introduction highlights a growing trend: usersâ willingness to share personal information to maintain a certain image online. As social media increasingly becomes a primary source of entertainment, itâs crucial for to distinguish between whatâs entertaining and whatâs safe.
