What It Is: TikTok’s latest trend has users confusing the people in their lives for a bit of fun. It starts with someone expressing that they’re, “so hungry they could eat…” followed by the name of someone with an obscure or niche connection to the friend or family member they’re talking to. This can be anyone from the person’s past — 6th grade boyfriends, childhood best friends, or past business partners. This format is unleashing TikTok users’ inner Internet sleuths, prompting many to go through their loved ones’ social media followers and tagged photos in hopes of finding a name that’ll ring a bell and cause a reaction. The trend continues to spread, with some of the people mentioned in viral videos even being found posting in the comments.
The Brand Takeaway: This simple trend’s success can be attributed to Gen Z’s affinity for seemingly random humor that is unpredictable, with the absurdity of the final punchline (those oddly specific names) being the joke itself. Brands can tap into this by embracing absurdity and infusing social content with unexpected twists and nonsensical comedic elements to connect with Gen Z’s unique sense of humor. Another takeaway is that social users gravitate to content that features genuine reactions and captures an emotional response in the moment. Brands seeking to jump on this trend could follow the trend’s prompt and consider naming niche products to unsuspecting followers, or nodding to IYKYK elements from your brand’s lore to further nail the unexpected punchline that social audiences are craving.
