How Many Brands Can Comment
What It Is: TikTok users are challenging brands to show up in their comment sections by posting, “Let’s see how many brands can comment” before a specific period of time ends—typically related to a flight, a night’s sleep, or another multi-hour event. But, while this call to action for corporations to show up has historically been popularized by social’s biggest influencers, smaller creators are now prompting love from brands in their comments. Specifically calling out that they are not, in fact, influencers and may have less than 1,000 followers in some cases, these creators are shooting their shot and inviting brands in to help them achieve their personal goals. Given that many do not have verified blue checkmarks (that seem to grant pre-determined attention from brands) on their profiles, it’s all the more exciting when these smaller creators see their requests completed and additional visibility given to their channels.
Brand Takeaway: Social users are increasingly likely to set explicit boundaries with brands and let them know exactly where they’re welcome to join in—and where they’re not. While it may seem difficult in a “silence brand” era for brands to meaningfully be accepted into these online conversations, everyday users are specifically signaling that contributing to their views and engagement is one welcomed route that won’t leave brands on the outside looking in. Smaller creators are recognizing that, if brands are going to reach new audiences in their comment sections, it should be mutually beneficial and help them reach their goals as well. Beyond trending topics and post formats of the day, this is a larger shift in power and influence that should signal to brands that, if they want something, they have to be willing to thoughtfully give back to the accounts that help make it happen for them.
