Have NYC Influencers Lost Their Touch?
What It Is: A few days ago, TikTok user @martinifeeny shared her hot take that New York City’s influencers are “boring” and “basic,” calling out these creators for adopting all too similar styles and becoming indistinguishable from one another. The opinion piece quickly went viral after popular NYC influencer Brigette, also known as Acquired Style, commented on the situation in a now-deleted duet. Now, TikTok is swirling with conversations around NYC influencers, with some coming to the defense of their favorite influencers and others agreeing with the original post. Non-NYC creators have weighed in with their negative personal experiences, native New Yorkers are lamenting that the “influencer version” of New York paints a completely different picture of the city, and others are jumping in by highlighting niche NYC creators they find more interesting.
The Brand Takeaway: This discourse around NYC influencers points to an overall fatigue of now-traditional “creator” content on social. When creators rely on overused formats like, “Get Ready With Me,” “Day In My Life,” or Unboxing videos to repeatedly show off their highly aesthetic (and largely unrealistic) lifestyles, the content starts to become repetitive and hard to relate to for most people. Social users typically look for individuality and creativity from brands and creators online, finding entertainment in unique perspectives and approaches rather than recycled content from the same handful of creators they constantly see in their feeds.
Brands can address this sentiment by not over-relying on stale or overused formats, avoiding too-polished or “perfect” creator content, and making sure your creators offer an authentic POV for your audience. There’s also merit in brands diversifying the creators that they partner with — consider those who may have a smaller following, but are creating niche content that highly resonates with their respective communities. At a time when social users are more and more critical of the content they’re consuming, brands can benefit from taking a chance on up-and-coming creators or those from diverse backgrounds who subvert the expectations of creator content, rather than reinforcing the norms.
