Graham Potter’s Face Swap Mania
What It Is: Whether or not you’re a fan of the English Premier League, you may be aware of the dire start to the season London club, West Ham United, have had so far. This is due to the viral craze started by their fans on Twitter in which they’ve swapped the face of their manager, Englishman Graham Potter, onto anything and anyone that they possibly can. As fans began trying to cope with the quick run of poor results the trend began with simple face swaps onto formerly struggling managers, However,it quickly took on a life of its own extending past just West Ham supporters, eventually leading to pictures of celebrities like Shaquille O’Neal, Wayne Rooneys children, and Ellen Degeneres bearing the face of the English manager. Though random at first glance, it has become a craze on X with known influencers in the football Twitter space partaking - and even official European clubs accounts, like Sevilla FC of Spain, have taken part.
Brand Takeaway: For brands looking at this trend and thinking “huh?”, the moment to jump in has passed—Potter was dismissed by West Ham last Saturday. But the lesson remains: soccer fans often navigate losses with absurd humor, rather than just rants. This is especially relevant as we head into one of the biggest 8-month stretches in sports—the NBA season, Super Bowl, and World Cup across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. With feeds soon packed with brand messages, the ones that break through will be those that mirror fans’ humor and make the event the hero, weaving the brand in subtly, rather than the other way around.
