What it is: The term mother originally comes from the Ballroom/Drag/LGBTQ+ community as a label for someone who guides someone new into the community, giving them the right tools and advice to live their most authentic life. It often also reflects the person's found (chosen) family and symbolizes a place of acceptance, whether that's IRL, virtual or somewhere in between. While the term still remains in this space it has also evolved onto the internet as a label for iconic women who exude grace, talent and panache. This term is usually used in the style of "[NAME] is mother."
How brands can jump in: As this term is deeply rooted in Queer culture, be mindful that you're using it correctly when jumping in on this trend. Have additional eyes on content using it in order to remain respectful to the Ballroom/Drag/LGBTQ+ community.
