Orcas Attacking Boats
What it is: In recent months, Orcas (also known as killer whales) in the Iberian Peninsula have been attacking boats by ramming into them. They have caused at least three sunken boats this year alone and damaged several more. While it is still up for debate as to why exactly they are doing this, social media users are discussing these recent events and supporting the Orcas in their endeavor to reclaim the seas.
What can brands learn: Memes are increasingly being utilized as a tactic for digital activism and it is evident with this trend surrounding the Orcas. It is important to be cognizant of the weight that memes can hold to impact societal learnings while still being a lighthearted in to talk about deeper collective issues.

Who they are: Amassing over 1.5 million followers, Dutch De Carvalho is a native New Yorker turned TikToker who loves to highlight his experiences living in the city while working multiple jobs from a less glamorized perspective. Dutch shares his experiences with mental health, working in child care, LGBTQIA+ issues, and how to navigate self care while on a budget.
Why we love them: We love Dutch because he keeps it real no matter what he's posting. New York City content, as well as many other cities on TikTok, tend to be glamorized and sometimes out of touch with the communities that live there. Dutch reminds us the beauty in getting involved in your community and being present in an authentic way can resonate with an audience just as much as aspirational content.
