What it is: Though country music has historically lagged behind rap and pop on streaming services, the genre — with Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs, and Zach Bryan leading the way — has caught on in a big way among younger listeners. The genre regularly thrives in live music spaces where fans can discover new artists in country halls, bars, and tours, but before 2020, the genre had little significance on streaming. Instead, listeners now opt for more traditional sources, like album sales, which comprise a much larger share of country music’s consumption than chart-topping genres.
What we can learn: While many music fans found new music via live venues before 2020, fans are now using TikTok and music streaming services to find new music, and, possibly, love for a new genre. The pandemic is continuing to have an effect on consumer mindsets and trends, even more than three years after the start of the pandemic.
