What it is: Americans are cutting back on spending this holiday season due to inflation. According to a Bloomberg poll, 60% of respondents said they plan to purchase gifts for fewer people. Meanwhile, more than one-third have decided to skip gift-giving altogether due to the costs. Gen Z and Millennials reported being especially pessimistic when it comes to the gifts they receive this year -- they expect to be disappointed.
What we can learn: It is important for brands to keep up on the current consumer mindsets. You don't need to avoid discussing gifts as a brand around the holidays. Instead, be mindful about the language used since the majority of Americans are cutting back on gift giving due to inflation.
