Lemon8 Launch: Should Your Brand Make an Account on the New ByteDance Platform?
What it is: Lemon8 is a platform for creators to share photos and short videos about wellness, travel, food, and beauty. The app was created by ByteDance amid political concern over national security and its relation to TikTok, calling for a potential ban of the app. After getting traction in Japan and Thailand, Lemon8 launched in the United States in February of this year. Lemon8 does not support vertical video scrolling like TikTok nor does it enable random video topics; all content is centered around trending topics like food, fashion, beauty, wellness, etc. Many of the posts on Lemon8 have #Lemon8partner at the end of the caption, signaling that Lemon8 paid creators to start posting on the app to manufacture the platform's popularity. The same influencers also took to TikTok to tell their audiences to join Lemon8.
How brands can jump in: Brands should take this opportunity to become pioneers of the Lemon8 app and secure their URL/username, as many creators have already created multiple accounts that secure usernames of public figures. Since it is slated for a May 2023 hard launch.

Urgency level: Those with early access to new platforms tend to gain more followers and popularity, as there are fewer accounts on the platform to compete with and content visibility becomes more accessible. Securing your brand’s username while you still can will make for an easier transition when launching on the Lemon8 app if it takes off, without having to pay other users to give up the name you want.
