Canada: More than 400 wildfires are burning in Canada, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fires Centre. The air quality in New York City was the worst in the world Wednesday, according to IQAir.com. In Quebec, more than 150 forest fires burned yesterday, with over 110 considered “out of control.”
Messi: On Wednesday, Argentine superstar Lionel Messi announced he’s going to join Major League Soccer club Inter Miami.
How brands can jump in: This is a huge conversation on Twitter as soccer fans and sports fanatics alike share encouragement (or disdain) about Messi’s decision. Being that there are many opinion on this topic, it is not recommended to enter this one unless your brand has a sports tie-in. If so, you could ask your followers to share who they would want to play on their favorite team or create copy that mentions soccer, soccer players, or players that switch to different teams.
#GhostbustersDay: On this day 39 years ago, Ghostbusters was released in theaters. The sci-fi comedy rose to critical acclaim and financial success by becoming a cultural phenomenon, as well as the kick-off of a classic film franchise.
How brands can jump in: If your brand is a movie buff, you could create copy that wished the franchise a happy birthday today.
Me when I hear ____
What it is: This trend involves writing out a scenario (perhaps you’re listening to your favorite song or you hear about your favorite thing being on sale) and then revealing what you do when you're in that scenario. Alternatively, you could become the thing you’re excited about (we see you, McDonald’s!) Humorous and relatable, this format allows users and brands to poke fun at themselves while also sharing something they’re passionate about - no matter how silly it is.
How brands can jump in: Brands could leverage a new deal going on by “becoming” their product or record a video of themselves doing something bizarre when they’re living in a certain scenario. Think: “Me when I hear that my roommate doesn’t feel like cooking today" or "Me when someone compliments me.”
Examples: 1, 2, 3
Urgency level: This format is relatively evergreen!
Brands & Pride Month
What it is: For the first time in its 40-year history, the Human Rights Campaign - the largest LGBTQIA+ rights organization - has declared a national state of emergency for members of the LGBTQIA+ community. In recent years, June has been a time for brands to showcase their inclusivity and support of Pride Month and the LGBTQIA+ community. This year, amid a frenzy of anti-LGBTQIA+ activity from a growing faction of alt-right conservatives, many brands are choosing to stay silent to avoid similar backlash that has been placed on Target, the LA Dodgers, The North Face, and more.
What we can learn: Brands’ advocacy during Pride Month should always be genuine, actionable, and impactful. There are many more ways to show support and spark change within marginalized communities beyond changing your brand’s profile picture for the month. When considering initiatives in support of Pride Month and the LGBTQIA+ community, ensure your brand is prepared to stand by its values in the face of criticism.
