Why Gen Z Stereotyping Isn’t Working
What it is: One common misconception about Gen Z is that they all share niche hobbies, interests, or approaches to activities. The problem isn't solely the inaccuracies in those stereotypes; rather, the challenge lies in the effectiveness of broadly applying them to an entire generation when crafting a campaign or piece of content. If audiences find it difficult to relate to many of the stereotypes attributed to their own generation, why do we continue to use generations as the standard for grouping audiences? Instead, we should be digging deeper to explore the rich subcultures Gen Z - and all of the generations before and after them - have created to resonate more effectively with consumers.
What brands can learn: Subcultures are ever-evolving communities. By leveraging these subcultures as a network, brands can identify elements that closely match their target audience. Subcultures can provide brands with a wealth of insight. A brand should examine niche audiences and see how Gen Z interacts with them, rather than trying to reach an entire generation with generalized messaging. Let's keep it real and authentic - brands should engage with a specialized audience without making exclusive generational associations.
