A brief overview of what is currently trending on on X in news, culture, and/or trending hashtags and formats.
Belichick: The Patriots coach is leaving the team after nearly 25 years and 6 Super Bowl titles.
South Africa: The country's officials are speaking out against Israel, and defending the innocent citizens of Gaza who have been harmed in the Israel-Hamas conflict against what their government has deemed apartheid.
A deeper dive into a subject that is impacting culture on a macro level, beyond just the social space.
Stan Language Gone Wild
What it is: Queer slang taking over socials, especially in standoms, is nothing new. Over the last year, we saw it get more drastic in language with terms like "mother," and "serving c*nt" showing up more and more on Twitter feeds. These slang words may feel harsh and even offensive, but they're part of a reclaimation that's led to a main stream acceptance of these terms within our digital vernacular.
Now, everything is mother, everything is serving, everything is EXTREME. And the stans, not one to be outdone, have gone to new lengths to take this insider language to a new extreme.
When a post went viral discussing how "gays can never just say their fav looks pretty," people took it as an invitation to go even crazier referencing natural disasters, moments in history, and incorporating the stan language in a satirical and absurd way. These new instances have started going viral and opened the floodgates of others adapting more and more absurd language in and outside of stan culture.
What brands can learn: On Twitter, nihilism and absurdism have always been present; but this stan language evolution into more risque territory echos other controversial humor. From 9/11 memes, to popular figure's death celebrations/jokes, and using slurs and harsh language in casual conversation; we've seen this all before.
As this type of content featuring celebrities is served to more casual users of the platform, we'll see what the response is to humor that some may consider off color. It's also an example of language becoming so extreme and satirical that stan language is normalized altogether. Eventually, we'll all just look at a celebrity and say "i love them!" again. It's all a circle, afterall.
