The Sprint to 'NoSpace'
What it is: MySpace appears to be back as a new app has emerged. Young tech entrepreneur Tiffany Zhong sought to fix the loneliness epidemic stemming from modern day social media. After studying social media habits over the last decade and deeming social "not social anymore," she created the Gen Z version of Myspace: 'Nospace.' In an effort to curb the ogling at other’s lives rather than engaging with them, Zhong promises an experience akin to millennial Myspace and the early days of Facebook. Features will include a customizable profile page with streams of casual updates (think: what you had for breakfast or what new band you’re listening to). Her hope to rebuild social for real connection, self-expression, & meaningful interaction has since attracted 380,000+ people to join the app's waitlist. No more algorithms dictating what users see and who they interact with. 'Nospace' joins a growing category of new platforms inspired by the old ones as Gen Z pines for a return to 2000s social media that was simple and prime for kinship. The current app offering just isn't cutting it for young adults as they've seen and felt its effects: poor mental health, low self-esteem, less sleep and physical movement. They, too, spend less time engaging with posts and more time in their DMs laughing at memes, falling down internet rabbit holes, and discussing current events. 'Nospace' thus marks the potential transition to a more democratic medium that feels like a giant global group chat.
What brands can learn: With a TikTok ban imminent that could expand to CapCut, Gauth, and Lemon8, 'NoSpace' has the potential to recapture these users. Gen Z will especially be drawn to the app's mission for less loneliness, more self-expression, and peer-to-peer bonding. While an app centered on connection sounds great, social marketers can't help but feel burntout by social app abundance. With so many mobile apps on the market, marketers & brands have no choice but to be selective about where they focus their time, energy, & dollars. Beyond marketers & brands, consumers themselves are fatigued by digital communications all together. So what's the solve? With many turning away from social media & email, overloaded & inundated with information & notifications, we could see a larger movement towards traditional mediums as seen with books & print media. While a shift like this won't happen over night, it's clear that younger generations want to be present & connected with both themselves & their surroundings. If there's anything we can take away from 'NoSpace' is that attention-grabbing is losing its allure. Maybe it's time we... go back to the basics?

“Tool belt generation”…that’s what many are calling Gen Z as they start to gravitate more towards blue-collar jobs like being an HVAC installer, plumber, or electrician.

Threads has overtaken X in 1 key metric. New data shows Meta’s Threads is consistently surpassing Elon Musk’s X in daily users in the U.S. While X still has more monthly users, Threads could be on its way to dethroning its competitor.
The new quarter life crisis: Over the last few years, running a marathon has become a milestone for a growing number of young adults. In 2019, 15% of NYC Marathon finishers were in their 20s. By 2023, that number jumped to 19%.
