The Impact of the SAG-Aftra Strike
What it is: On July 13, SAG-Aftra (Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) members announced they are going on strike to fight for better wages and residual payments, working conditions, as well as contracts that include provisions on artificial intelligence. Actors on strike are barred from promoting their latest projects on social media, in interviews, and appearances on red carpets. Along with the WGA (Writers Guild of America) strike which started in May, many ongoing projects are being put on hold in an even bigger way, postponing all work behind the scenes since there are no performers around to film scenes previously written by struck writers.
What brands can learn: Since the strike began, there has been much debate over social media influencer involvement in the strike, whether or not they will be able to take on work for studios now that they cannot tap into actors. For the longest time, influencers have existed in a bit of a gray zone in terms of whether or not their work would be affected by the strike, since many of them are technically non-union members. SAG-Aftra released an FAQ explaining that non-members that may seek future membership in the guild would be disqualified from membership if they fulfill work or services for a struck company unless they are previously under contract. This is important to note for brands in the entertainment space as they consider working with talent in the coming months, whether it be a traditional actor or an internet celebrity.
