Man and the Roman Empire
What it is: TikTokker @Paige.Elysee recently posed a very important question: how often do straight men think about the Roman Empire? The answer has been surprising everyone, as it turns out straight men think about it more often than anyone would ever imagine. The question has been trending on TikTok since last week and has led people to wonder why so many men are obsessed with the post-Republican state of Ancient Rome. The trend has also led to others trying to decipher what the queer and girl versions of the Roman Empire are.
What brands can learn: Aside from the funny videos born out of this trend, we’ve also gotten a deeper insight into the minds of straight men. Masculinity has been overemphasized throughout the history of the Roman Empire, with the legion often being associated with military power, war, sports, language, architecture, etc. Men’s obsession over this historic time appears to be a reflection of how they defined masculinity and how important being a masculine man is to them. While the queer or girl versions of the Roman Empire are more contemporary to today’s world - and include things like Nicki Minaj’s verse on Monster or a musical challenge from RuPaul’s Drag Race - straight men appear to think that they have to look back at history to find a representation of masculinity.
