Gen Z vs. Inflation
What it is: Bank of America’s annual Better Money Habits survey, has revealed how Gen Z is tightening their pockets as the generation faces the current inflation. Three out of four Gen Zers have changed their spending habits due to increased prices. These lifestyle changes include cooking more at home, spending less on clothes, and limiting grocery purchases to just the essentials. Even as inflation slows down, nearly all those who have adopted these changes plan on maintaining them over the next year.
What brands can learn: There is a juxtaposition when it comes to the way Gen Zers behave. While the generation faces inflation and has made major lifestyle changes because of it, we’ve also seen how the meaning of “necessary purchases” has changed with them. While for older generations a necessary purchase may mean food and personal hygiene products, for Gen Z - a generation that highly regards mental health as a top priority - we see that they deem joyful purchases as necessary as well. For brands, this means focusing on how their products and/or services positively impact the mental health and the joy of Gen Z, as this can mean the difference between how the generation categorizes said brand; unnecessary or necessary.
