@MiriTheSiren and Her Impactful Influence
What it is: Where have you been if you haven't heard of Miriam Webb, popularly known as @mirithesiren on TikTok? If you're not familiar with Miriam, she was previously a Chick-fil-A employee who gained fame by sharing reviews of the meals she purchased herself from Chick-fil-A. She would review new food and beverage items and interesting food combos she would make herself and share with her followers. Miriam Webb's enticing food reviews had a significant impact, drawing numerous viewers to Chick-fil-A solely because of her recommendations. Her videos amassed hundreds of thousands, sometimes even millions, of views, inspiring countless people to visit the restaurant. Despite providing Chick-fil-A with extensive unpaid publicity through her videos, the company has decided to stop Miriam's content. According to Miriam, Chick-fil-A's upper management and PR team informed her that her videos violated company rules, with no willingness to make exceptions or collaborate with her. Although she couldn't disclose the policy she breached, she could continue making Chick-fil-A reviews without wearing her uniform. Miriam explained to her followers and fans that she was not mad at Chick-fil-A, but she decided to resign from her position at Chick-fil-A in Los Angeles County to concentrate on full time content creation. Which turned into a full circle moment as she's now a Shake Shack partner with many other offers on the table that are currently in the works. On top of that, Miriam's Shake Shack reviews were strategically posted on Sundays, capitalizing on Chick-fil-A's closure that day.
What brands can learn: There's been heavy discussion about Chick-fil-A missing out on a significant opportunity by not collaborating with Miriam. The issue isn't necessarily a specific policy, but rather the perception that Chick-fil-A didn't extend an olive branch to work with Miriam under different circumstances. Many of Miriam's fans are upset because Miriam has been a strong advocate for the brand, and the lack of recognition feels like a missed chance for Chick-fil-A. This sentiment has led some consumers to purchase from competitors of Chick-fil-A like Shake Shack who they feel have embraced and appreciated Miriam's authentic content. So what can brands learn from this? Miriam is a small creator who brought so much service to Chick-fil-A due to her honest and authentic reviews with nothing in return. Consumers are more likely to trust recommendations from creators they follow than traditional advertisements. Creators big and small play a vital role in helping brands connect with consumers, drive engagement, and ultimately, achieve their marketing goals authentically and effectively. While policies are important, brands should also be willing to be flexible and adapt to unique opportunities.
