The Generational Expectation Shift
What it is: A new trend has emerged where users are comparing themselves to their mothers, or parents in general, at a specific age. For example, one user is comparing her parents at 26, getting married and starting their lives together to her brother, who is currently 26, upset that people cheated in their family Easter Egg hunt. This trend is shedding light on generational differences and a shift in expectations for young adults now. In our parents’ generation, by 25 you were likely settling or already settled down and starting a family with your partner, whereas today Gen Z is in no rush to do so or fully embrace adulthood in that way. To their core, Gen Z continues to feel like “a teenage girl,” not ready for the massive undertaking and responsibility that is marriage and kids. Many of us are still trying to figure out our place in this world and what we want to do with our lives.
What brands can learn: This trend heavily highlights generational differences and the shift in what is expected from our newer generations. As our new generations age, new norms will be established that people and brands will have to get behind. In previous years, brands would be marketing to the young adult who is a new parent and whose purchasing behavior is influenced by what the family and home needs but these days they just have to market to the young adult, who likely doesn’t have all their shit together and is just trying to navigate the day to day life that is adulthood, who’s purchasing behavior is influenced by what makes them happy, consuming/purchasing with themselves at top of mind. Though young adults are getting older, they still feel at their core like they are teenagers, focusing on themselves and their needs first, which brands can tap into and relate to.
