Arrakis FOMO
What it is: Much like the Barbie-ification of last summer, we've seen increased pop culture moments surrounding mega-movie releases. Dune: Part Two has become the latest in a blockbuster that users across social platforms have developed memes around, references to, or crossed over to other popular media.
Whether referencing quotes, fan-favorite scenes, or signature iconography and costuming, people are creating a surround sound moment to share their excitement and passion for Dune. It echoes other movies or TV shows that have proliferated subtly on social and drove FOMO and curiosity among casual social users.
What brands can learn: This is an example of the power of FOMO driving real life viewership and ultimately spend. We've seen this happen with popular watercooler TV shows over the years, but this has been one of the first real examples of "event-viewing" at the theatre post-pandemic.
In a time when people are looking for more of a reason to leave the house, social conversation and digital FOMO makes reluctancy go out the window. People are more and more likely to try a new genre or a piece of media that wasn't on their radar. It's tried and true: if people feel like everyone's talking about something they're unaware of, they want to have a seat at the table and be in on the conversation.
