Berkeley, Burlington, and Cambridge: The Holy Trinity of Indie/Alt Music Listener Cities
What it is: Yesterday was a big day for avid music listeners as the highly anticipated Spotify Wrapped dropped for subscribers to see and share what their listening habits looked like over the last year. Wrapped typically shows you who your top artists and songs were, but this year there were some extra additions such as a personal message from your top artist and listener archetypes with custom illustrations. Specifically, users honed in on the the feature that showed places around the world that they shared similar music listening habits with. Many users were told that the cities their listening habits aligned with most were the cities of Berkeley, CA, Burlington, VT, and Cambridge, MA. Spotify users ended up taking this feature to share on social and found that a lot of people, specifically within the LGBTQIA+ community shared the same music taste and location destination..
What brands can learn: Spotify Wrapped is a reminder for brands that making your consumers feel special and individualized goes a long way. Many brands end up replicating the Wrapped format for social posts, listing out their top products for the year to tap into the occasion, but what ways can you emulate the feeling that Wrapped gives consumers instead? Brands are consistently collecting data on their consumers, and Wrapped has managed to take that and relay that back to consumers in a way that feels friendly rather than creepy.
