$78 At Newark Airport
What it is: This trend originated from New York Times columnist and X user David Brooks, who gained traction on his post for declaring that a meal of a burger, fries, and drink cost him 78 dollars at Newark Airport. Since this has been posted, the restaurant has added context to the extravagent bill stating that the majority of the cost was from the amount of drinks he had ordered at the bar, making up 80% of the bill. However, X users are resonating with Brooks' post and creating humorous responses with what their 78 dollar meal would consist of.
What brands can learn: It is important for brands to recognize that during hard economic and political times, social users will turn to humorous social posts to cope with the state of the political and socioeconomic climate. That being said it is important to proceed with caution. If your product's prices have increased it is likely that social users will comment on it, and while it comes off as funny when it comes from a person, the brand joking about it can come off as insensitive to those who might be suffering. Your brand does not always have to be in on the joke, and if a competitor is raising their prices, best to avoid commenting on it in case your brands decide to do the same in the future.
