Grimace and The New York Mets
What it is: Mets fans, this one’s for you! A fast-food mascot is here to save your team. Social users are attributing the recent 7-game winning streak of the Major League Baseball team the New York Mets to Grimace, the McDonald’s mascot, after he threw out the ceremonial first pitch at their game against the Miami Marlins. After Grimace‘s resurgence last year with the introduction of the limited edition Grimace Shake at McDonalds, the beloved purple character took the internet by storm, creating plenty of memes and a cult following of the character. After this winning streak (that unfortunately ended yesterday), sports fans everywhere are praising the character, adding to the madness of the Grimace cult following.
What brands can learn: Sometimes coincidences happen and you have to act quickly when they do. When the stars align and your brand is in the right place at the right time, you have a finite window to pounce. The winning streak is already over, but in the course of a week the brand was able to own the moment on their social handles by acknowledging the crazy coincidence, solidifying this chapter as a permanent fixture in Grimace’s history. While it is important to gauge the legal ramifications of directly acknowledging anything in pop culture, it’s getting creative in these moments and chasing the heat that make for great organic social.
