Target’s Late to the Lip Party
What it is: Target posted a few days ago a reel of a Target basket on a background all turning pink saying that something pink is coming. The comment section lit up with consumers guessing what it was going to be and showing excitement around potential collabs with their favorite pink brands. Over the weekend, they dropped the news, that the new partnership was with Kylie Cosmetics, and it did not pass the vibe check. The comment section did its thing with people coming to write witty one liners about their disappointment.
What brands can learn: When it comes to teasing launches, it’s not just about counting impressions or shares; it’s about diving deep into the quality of engagement and feedback. Effective community management offers invaluable insights into what consumers really want and expect which can help brands better fine-tune their marketing strategies. Plus, it’s crucial to make sure your teaser content is realistic and in alignment with consumer expectations to avoid any backlash. It may have been that the teaser felt almost too-vague which left too much room for interpretation, ultimately leading to disappointment regardless of the outcome. Brands should also look to make sure they’re not behind trend. Kylie cosmetics were wildly popular in the mid 2010’s but have since seen a significant drop off due to changing consumer preferences, popularity, variety in competitive offerings, and relationship to the brand’s owner. To the consumers, this addition to the store is not as new and exciting as it would have been if this happened in 2016.
