Gen Z interns editing the videos

What it is: As the temperature rises and the suns sets later in the day intern season is once again upon us. While intern-based content is nothing new to social, each year this content evolves with new bits or trends popping up for brands to follow. This year we've seen the rise of "gen z interns" being allowed to edit their brand's video content, resulting in hilariously and intentionally poorly edited clips populating fyps. A wildly successful version of this came from the Edgar Allen Poe Museum in Richmond, Virigina who posted a 24 second nonsensical video of their manager inhaling and boasting about their "chairs. and more chairs.” Many brands have tapped into this trend now, emphasizing the absurdist humor from the youth movement across the social landscape that many brands are beginning to experiment with.
What brands can learn: This content highlights to brands that just because it doesn't make sense does not mean that it will not perform. These low effort, and not so informative, videos have been going viral (eg. The Poe Museum receiving 2.7 MILLION likes on a TIkTok), and are an incredibly easy way into the "intern/boss" conversation that becomes so topical during the summers. Though, it is important for brands to be mindful of perpetuating the "interns run the social accounts" stereotype as brands and the social profession should represented accurately. Beyond just interns, this trend may have signified a change in content with nonsensical "brain rot" style content filling for you pages across the world, but this format is an interesting and low-risk way for brands who are new to absurdity to test the waters with their audiences without losing the plot. When in doubt, absurdity it out.
