Trend Fatigue
What it is: Over recent years, there has been a constant stream of new trends emerging almost weekly, initially met with excitement and enthusiasm. However, there has been a noticeable shift in emotion lately, with many individuals now seeking to distance themselves from the trend wave. This change may be attributed to trend fatigue, as the rapid cycle of trends seems to be moving faster than ever before. Trends emerge effortlessly, beginning with the introduction of a new concept followed by widespread adoption. They are not only driven by visual appeal but also fulfill our desire for social connection and acceptance, allowing for individual expression. FOMO further drives participation in trends, particularly when they appear exclusive. Platforms like TikTok and Instagram, along with influencers, have revolutionized trend culture, making it more accessible and accelerating the spread of trends compared to traditional media sources like magazines and newspapers. Consequently, our attention spans are getting shorter, which makes us more likely to feel bored. Psychologists suggest that trying out new trends can help us feel happy and excited because it triggers a release of dopamine in our brains. However, this fast turnover of trends poses a challenge for both people and brands to keep pace with.
What brands can learn: Trend fatigue should be acknowledged as a genuine concern and we should understand the limitations of consumers in keeping up with the rapid pace of trends. In a trend landscape, authenticity takes precedence, emphasizing the importance of genuine connections over jumping on every passing trend that presents itself. Brands should assess whether to engage with trends or simply appreciate them. It's vital to consider alignment with the brand's audience and values. Jumping on every trend can lead to fatigue among users and fans. If a trend doesn't resonate, it's better to abstain rather than force.
