Roblox's Influence might be More Powerful than any of us Realize
What it is: Roblox's 2023 Digital Expression, Fashion & Beauty Trends report provides insights into how Gen Z users are shaping their avatars on the platform, which has gained significant popularity, particularly among those under 16. The report highlights the symbiotic relationship between digital and physical fashion for Gen Z, emphasizing the importance of digital fashion for self-expression and mental well-being. Customizing avatars, which serves as a form of personal expression, is a critical aspect of why Gen Z users love Roblox. Roblox collaborates with various brands, some including Nike and Gucci. The report indicates that users feel less judgment in the metaverse compared to the physical world. Many users prefer building avatars on Roblox as it feels more representative of themselves than posting photos on other social media platforms. 56% of respondents (U.S. + U.K. Gen Z users ages 14 to 26) prioritize styling their avatars over styling themselves in the physical world, and 84% say their physical style is inspired by their own and others' avatars on Roblox. In addition 51% of respondents are likely to consider a brand after trying on its virtual items. Roblox's influence extends beyond gaming, significantly impacting fashion, self-expression, and brand engagement within its Gen Z user base.
What brands can learn: Brands can learn valuable insights from Roblox's success, particularly its appeal to the influential Gen Z demographic. Roblox's popularity stems from its identity as a social and immersive space, with avatar customization setting it apart from mainstream social media platforms. This unique feature provides Gen Z with a distinctive avenue for self-expression. The report found that 56% of Gen Z users care more about dressing up their online characters than how they look in real life. This shows how much digital identity matters to them. Brands can take advantage of this by including virtual experiences in strategy. It's important for brands to understand that places like Roblox shape how Gen Z behaves, so adjusting a brand strategy to fit what Gen Z likes is a win.
