A deeper dive into a subject that is impacting culture on a macro level, beyond just the social space.
Ambiguous Object Messages
What it is: Users across X and Instagram are pairing short messages with images of seemingly random objects to express a wistful, uncertain, or absurd sentiment. These sentiments, which already have an unclear meaning, are even more confusing when combined with images of anything ranging from a croissant to a DVD player. These "ambiguous object messages" are still relatable, so what about them makes people stop and think? Are they simply meant to be silly and entertaining? Are they prompts to start random pieces of conversation? Are they meant to leave you with a deep emotional realization or need to take action? The reason could be any (or none) of these.
What brands can learn: Shareable images on social are likely becoming less structured and more open for interpretation: they don't necessarily have to follow a recognizable trending format to be seen by many, and they can combine multiple disjointed concepts. The primary thing that matters is that they still effectively communicate an idea or feeling. The meaning of these "ambiguous object messages," for example, is very much in the eye of the beholder. The format doesn't inherently make sense, but it somehow resonates with people. It's a good reminder for brands to take visual risks and be a little unserious from time to time. If the content you're posting to your feeds is making too much sense (i.e. it's predictable) to fans, it probably won't keep their attention for too long.
