Two People That Match Each Other's Freak
What it is: On April 12, 2024, the musical artist Tinashe released a song called "Nasty" that took the internet by storm, creating trends on multiple platforms such as a TikTok dance and the one we're here to talk about today: "two people that match each others freak." This trend emerged on X and is inspired by the chorus of the song where Tinashe asks the listener to ponder "Is somebody going to match my freak?" To translate that in SFW terms, she is asking if anyone out there is able to get on her level of weird, to complement her energy if you will. Since then, social users, particularly in fandom spaces have revived this trend to show off their favorite couples and friendships that they deem to match each other's freak.
What brands can learn: This trend is an indicator that social users are continuing to value individuality. They are conducting themselves in ways that diverge from the norm, and they are looking for spaces in order to express that side of themselves and find others who match their level of uniqueness. This trend begs the questions for brands: how can you create that space for social users to come out of their shell? Is there a niche consumer behavior to call out with this trend? The goal here is to envoke people who are already participating in that behavior, but also spark conversation for those who are not familiar. Don't be afraid to get a little weird!
