The Resurgence of Wendy’s

What it is: Wendy’s was at the forefront of brands showing their personalities on social media in 2017 by showing up on Twitter with a bold personality for their mascot. Users loved the brand's ability to humanize Wendy and especially loved her sassy and at times unhinged tone of voice. Wendy’s strategy on social paid off for them, racking in massive engagement numbers and they have continued this social strategy but translated it to a new platform, Threads, 7 years later, where a multitude of brands have a similar tactic of showing off their relatability by personifying themselves to increase brand likability and consumer interest. Wendy’s tried and true strategy has continued to be successful for them over the years and across platforms, having the ability to break through the clutter of other brands of social.
What brands can learn: Wendy’s has been a must watch brand on social media for years, influential to the start of brand personalities being added into social strategy plans. 7 years later, they are embracing the opportunity to return to their roots and build up an audience with a previously successful strategy just on a slightly different platform. With new platforms being introduced, a brands ability to adapt and expand their strategies to be inclusive of them is paramount. Brand’s need to be able to keep up with the speed of social, including new platforms being introduced. Additionally, users value authenticity and relatability from brands, so being able to give your band a personality and voice of its own will garner users interest. Lastly, sticking to your strategy that has been proven successful but refining and expanding as needed as social and its users grow and change will be beneficial for long term engagement and success.
