The Impact of Beyoncé's New Album COWBOY CARTER
What it is: If you don't know Beyoncé by now you might be living under a rock (no judgment for your lifestyle choices!), but for those who do not know her she is one of the biggest, if not THE biggest, name in music. Getting her start in the 1990s with the musical group Destiny's Child, she has since amassed a huge following for her solo career with over seven studio albums, five live albums, three compilation albums, five EPs, one soundtrack album, two karaoke albums and 80 singles as well as her latest Renaissance Tour earning more than $579 million, with 2.7 million fans attending worldwide. The tracklist of her upcoming album COWBOY CARTER releasing Friday March, 29 has been dominating social media feeds. The tracklist has revealed that this album brings to light that Beyoncé has taken on the task of bringing country music back to its Black roots. The tracklist art itself is covered in allusions to the history of Black country music, from the overall design referencing the "Lineup of the 1955 Big Rock & Roll Show", an all-Black festival from the 1950s to the inclusion of the Chitlin Circuit: a network of live entertainment venues in the United States that catered to African American audiences and booked performers during the period of Jim Crow segregation from the early 20th century through the 1960s, helping start the careers of Duke Ellington, Aretha Franklin, and more. Additionally featuring artists such Linda Martell, the first commercially successful Black country artist, she aims to highlight a history that isn't as well known and educate her massive audience on a genre that may be unfamiliar to them.
What brands can learn: It is important for brands to recognize the impact that this album will have on a variety of audiences and the discussions it will and already has brought to the surface. The internet tends to be a space where people make light of serious situations, and it is important to be aware of the conversation surrounding a topic before hopping in with a joke or an opinion. Staying culturally relevant does NOT mean your brand needs to engage with every trending topic. In fact, it is a huge skill to be able to identify what is worth jumping in on and what is worth sitting out.
