Meta launches Threads, Twitter's newest rival 📱

What it is: Last night, Mark Zuckerberg challenged Elon Musk by dropping a text-based social networking app called Threads. Users can log in with their Instagram credentials, where their username and verification status carries over. They can customize their Threads profile independently and choose to automatically pre-load their following list. Posts can be up to 500 characters long (almost double that of a tweet) and can include links, photos and videos that are up to 5 minutes long. This all said, the user experience of scrolling is very similar to Twitter‘s UX and, as a result, has garnered a lot of excitement. What's crazier is that the app has attracted 23 million signups in just 12 hours - pointing to its positive reception. For reference, OpenAI's ChatGPT reached 10 million sign-ups in 40 days, whereas Instagram took 2.5 months to hit 1 million downloads 🤯 So... OKAY META!
What brands can learn: Brands, Threads might just be the new Twitter 👀 We're not saying that Twitter is dead, but for those of you that exited Twitter with the entry of Elon, Zuckerberg's new app presents itself as an opportunity to play with text-based content again. Threads joins a growing list of platforms such as Bluesky and Spill - as well as older competitors like Mastodon - looking to challenge Twitter’s dominance in the microblogging sphere. With the app's enforcement of Instagram's same community guidelines & similar interface, it makes for a promising space for those concerned about brand safety on Twitter. If it's a good fit, we encourage you to enter this new area of social play!
