Pop Culture Accounts Are Top News Sources Now
What it is: Pop Crave and Pop Base are two go-to sources for pop culture consumers fascinated by the latest updates on everything from celebrities they stan to viral memes of the week. Lately, however, people are seeing more breaking news from these pop culture accounts rather than from traditional news outlets. Sentiments like "I can't believe I found out who the new President will be from Pop Crave" are becoming commonplace as these accounts post more about political happenings, Supreme Court decisions and environmental crises that squarely affect both followers and non-followers.
What brands can learn: Learning that aliens might be real from Pop Base isn't necessarily an accident. It moreso highlights the larger shift in social media and other alternative news sources supplanting traditional media as daily sources of information and the tendency of these pop culture accounts' posts to show up on your feed without you searching for them. That kind of massive reach beyond their follower count highlights how pop culture accounts will continue to influence how we consume news, and brands should be actively studying how their fans engage with this increasing politics-pop culture overlap.
