Gen Z’s love for Pinterest
What it is: Gen-Z loves Pinterest! In Q3 2023, the platform's active monthly users hit 482 million and revenue was up 11% YoY. Pinterest's success is all thanks to Gen Z who make up more than 40% of the active users and is the platform's fastest-growing demographic. Pinterest is growing because it satisfies a different and more positive niche than other platforms. Other platforms offer a place to share thoughts, photos, and videos for comments and likes whereas Pinterest is for exploration and inspiration. It's been reported that standard social media apps cause negative mental health effects. Pinterest offers a place to get lost in a non-judgmental space to make aspirational mood boards and scroll through aesthetically pleasing images. There is a wholesomeness to Pinterest that other platforms no longer have.
What brands can learn: Brands who are interested in targeting Gen Z should start keeping an eye on Pinterest. Its growing popularity with Gen Z could open up opportunities for brands to start advertising on the platform to reach this audience. Take note of what kind of content is popular on Pinterest. For example, cottagecore and dark academia aesthetics have been consistently popular on the platform. Brands can use Pinterest content to analyze what Gen Z likes and use the information to create content for other platforms. Exploration and inspiration are Pinterest's top selling points and brands should use this platform for those exact purposes.
