Lost & Found Media – "Ulterior Motives"
What it is: Have you ever listened to a song and couldn't quite place the name? Luckily these days we have internet sleuths and software like Shazam to find the answers for us, but when it comes to media from back in the day, a lot of audio clips have been misplaced in the depths of the internet, just waiting to be found. In the latest internet fixation of Lost Media, TikTok users resurfaced a song snippet, originally pulled from a 2021 WatZatSong post from user Carl92 in which he had claimed that he found the short song clip from "a bunch of really old files in a DVD backup." Ever since then, social users have applauded the song snippet for it's 1980s music style and lyrics, searching high and low to try to find the full song somewhere. Well, nothing on the internet can stay a secret forever. On April 28, 2024, the song was found with the name "Ulterior Motives", made by the director Christopher Saint Booth for one of his adult films. While users are now giving some side eye glances toward Carl92, Christopher Saint Booth has come forward saying that he will be releasing a SFW full version of the song! A huge win for the lost media community.
What brands can learn: This trend in particular brings up thoughts surrounding digital footprint. Internet users have incredible detective skills that rival the FBI (half kidding) and these days it seems like nothing stays unsurfaced for very long. That being said, it is important for brands to take a beat before sending messages out into the world, whether it be on or off of social. Think about if your messaging is harmful toward any communities or if the meaning could be misconstrued. Gut check a campaign post with someone who isn't as close to the project. There are many released campaigns these days that could have benefitted from an outside opinion.
