The solar eclipse
What it is: Social media lit up with reactions to Monday's total solar eclipse, a once-in-a-generation event that caused seemingly everyone to pay attention to the same thing at the same time. Whether people were creating memes about eclipse glasses or connecting the celestial event to pop culture, the whole internet gathered to marvel together. The eclipse touched every type of media (see: “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler hitting #1 on US iTunes) and created an unprecedented shared space for conversation between users and brands alike.
What brands can learn: Although the next total solar eclipse to cross North America won't happen for another twenty years, brands should always be listening for moments that build online community and drive engagement. Brands showed up in a plethora of different ways for this one: some created eclipse-specific products, some highlighted existing products to capitalize on the moment and some simply spoke to the vibes that we were all experiencing. The big takeaway for brands here is to not miss speaking to such a special event if they have a feasible way in – Eclipse Gum, for example, was notably absent from Monday's banter despite possessing a clear path to owning the conversation. Not every brand will have as clear of a path, but it's worth brainstorming a few ways to delight your fanbase during communal events as special as a solar eclipse.
