Crazy dating app ideas, but one of them is real 👀
What it is: A new dating app, Duolicious, has emerged on the market that seems to bridge together internet meme culture with anime & fandom. This personality-based dating app & website matches users together based on their interests & views. Launched in July 2023, the app only recently gained popularity outside of the 4chan userbase after a TikTok video went viral with users trying it out. While Duolicious is not officially affiliated with 4chan in any way, it was created by a 4chan user, Duodaddy, with the imageboard's audience in mind. Important to note, many are referring to Duolicious as the "femcel dating app" stemming primarily from 4chan's reputation for attracting a certain type of asocial audience of "incels" and "femcels." So far, it seems that Duolicious has an extremely niche userbase making this space the wild wild west.
What brands can learn: With dating app fatigue a big issue among young adults exploring their dating goals, it's no surprise that we've seen sarcastic ideas arise. Faux dating apps like "boring4boring," "Together But Alone," & "Candy Crush" have provided users with comic relief as they continue to strike out in a left swipe/right swipe setting. Duolicious, however, is an interesting and REAL contender for changing the way online dating operates. It seems that what makes it so great is its unabridged psychotic nature. According to a user, the app "somehow has no scammers and every person there is genuinely insane." And while craziness isn't usually encouraged, it is when so many young adults filter & perfect their outward-facing lives on the internet. This is all to say, brands, that the theme of authenticity continues to be seen in culture, even when it borders on psychosis. This is also to say that a dating app where memes are central is a larger indication of its resonance with Gen Z & Gen Alpha. To them, memes are a universal language -- a peek into someone's life experiences & mentality through a snarky, sarcastic lens that makes it all the more tolerable.
