How Concert Movies Made a Comeback 👀
What it is: Taylor Swift and Beyoncé are lighting pre-sale records on fire with their new concert films. We're seeing a whole new interest in the genre. This conversation has extended to social, traditional media, and even retail as people prep for the irl experiences in theatres. Interestingly, concert films are not a new genre but have disappeared from the public consciousness for a while. We're nearly a decade removed from concert event films of Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, and even the Glee cast. However, now that concerts are live-streamed on social driving FOMO and high ticket prices leading to inaccessibility, there's a renewed interest in reliving or experiencing the two hottest shows of 2023.
What brands can learn: Obviously, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé needed no help selling their concerts. Throughout the summer, TikToks highlighted the different surprise songs, mute challenges, and outfits of their world tours on social. Those present and at home felt like they were living through a generational MOMENT. Many were not experiencing it in person, and those who attended were chasing that high afterward, worried they'd never experience such again. In a genius move that plays into both audiences' hands, the songstresses are democratizing their experience. As exclusivity and ticket prices drive conversation among young fans, now everyone can experience these shows near them AND at a reasonable dollar. Fans are celebrating the move and hoping this continues ushering in a new wave of theatrical experiences: Event viewings. Forget Comic-Con: From Barbenheimer to Taylor Swift to Bey, your multiplex has the hottest looks and the most active fans this year.
