"Gay Pop" Origin Debates
What it is: As discussed in yesterday's issue, Jojo Siwa released a new song called "Karma" that revealed her new "adult" persona to the world. Since the songs release it has gained popularity for a number of reasons, one of those being Jojo going into an interview with Billboard where she said she is inventing a new genre: "Gay Pop." Since Jojo has made this comment, there has been a lot of backlash from the LGBTQIA+ community for Jojo's lack of knowledge or respect for her predeccessors. Additionally, fans are pointing out that the song is not even original, as it dates back as far as 2012 in an unreleased collaboration with Brit Smith and Timbaland.
What brands can learn: When you reinvent yourself, it is a second chance for a first impression, so it is imperative to make sure that it counts. In Jojo's case, she made a remark that she believed to be spearheading the Gay Pop movement, but it fell flat with her audience as it came off as uninformed of the landscape around her. This is an important reminder as to why strategy goes hand-in-hand with creative when relaunching a brand persona. Strategy, especially in social, informs not just what the brand is doing, but why it is doing it in order to position itself in a larger cultural landscape.
