The Satirization of the Mandela Effect
What it is: The Mandela Effect is no stranger to the internet. It's always provoked conversation around collective false memory, alternate timelines, conspiracy theories, and more. But now we've seen the concept taken to an absurd new place. In a recent trend, users post a TikTok carousel using Nelson Mandela and calling out the "crazy new Mandela effect" alongside a deeply unserious song and pointing out that it was NOT in the movie depicted on the second slide.
These are often dark, obvious, and completely hilarious overlapping cultural relics and usually have a direct literal connection between the song lyrics and the movie posters.
What brands can learn: In a new era of mistrust, misinformation, and AI manipulations, we have crossed into parody. Creating your own absurdly obvious misinformation is critiquing hysteria, general mistrust, and shouting into the void of our dark future.
As users tap into nihilism, they're taking back control over something that is seemingly never going away and has negative implications. As brands, we can tap into these cultural moments as they're discussed and as satirical humor becomes more of an internet flavor and coping mechanism, choose to experiment with it.
